I-a avortat mama”.

Anul 1958 are o semnificaţie anume.

    Philosophy is dead

Traditionally these are questions for philosophy, but philosophy is dead. Philosophy has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics. Scientist have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.

(Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow, The Grand Design, Random House of Canada, 2010, p. 5)

    Science is philosophical

Professor Hawking has probably been talking to the wrong philosophers, or picked up some wrong ideas about the kinds of discussion that currently go on in philosophy of science. His lofty dismissal of that whole enterprise as a useless, scientifically irrelevant pseudo-discipline fails to reckon with several important facts about the way that science has typically been practised since its early-modern (seventeenth-century) point of departure and, even more, in the wake of twentieth century developments such as quantum mechanics and relativity.

Science has always included a large philosophical component, whether at the level of basic presuppositions concerning evidence, causality, theory-construction, valid inference, hypothesis-testing, and so forth, or at the speculative stage where scientists ignore the guidance offered by well-informed philosophers only at risk of falling into various beguiling fallacies or fictions. Such were those ‘idols of the theatre’ that Bacon warned against in his New Organon of 1620, and such – albeit in a very different philosophic guise – those delusive ideas that, according to Kant, were liable to lead us astray from the path of secure investigation or truth-seeking enquiry. This was sure to happen, he warned, if the exercise of pure (speculative) reason concerning questions outside and beyond the empirical domain were mistakenly supposed to deliver the kind of knowledge that could be achieved only by bringing sensuous intuitions under adequate or answering concepts. While in no way wishing to lumber science with the baggage of Kantian metaphysics I would suggest that this diagnosis, or something like it, applies to a great many of the speculative notions nowadays advanced by theoretical physicists including proponents of string theory (Hawking among them) and some of the more way-out quantum conjectures. These thinkers appear unworried – blithely unfazed, one is tempted to say – by the fact that their theories are incapable of proof or confirmation, or indeed of falsification as required by Karl Popper and his followers. After all, it is the peculiar feature of such theories that they posit the existence of that which at present, and perhaps forever, eludes any form of confirmation by observation or experiment.

(…) To adapt a quotation by Kant in a different though related context: philosophy of science without scientific input is empty, while science without philosophical guidance is blind. At any rate it is rendered perilously apt to mistake the seductions of pure hypothetical invention for the business of formulating rationally warranted, metaphysically coherent, and – if only in the fullness of time – empirically testable conjectures.

  • I have come to the conclusion that Darwinism is not a testable scientific theory, but a metaphysical research programme – a possible framework for testable scientific theories (p.167)

I do not think that Darwinism can explain the origin of life. I think it quite possible that life is so extremely improbably that nothing can “explain” why it originated; for statistical explanation must operate, in the last instance, with very high probabilities. But if our high probabilities are merely low probabilities which have become high because of the immensity of the available time (as in Boltzmann’s “explanation”), then we must not forget that in this way it is possible to “explain” almost everything. Even so, we have little enough reason to conjecture that any explanation of this sort is applicable to the origin of life. But this does not affect the view of Darwinism as situational logic, once life and its framework are assumed to constitute our “situation”.

I think that there is more to say for Darwinism than that it is just one metaphysical research programme among others. Indeed, its close resemblance to situational logic may account for its great success, in spite of the almost tautological character inherent in the Darwinian formulation of it, and for the fact that so far no serious competitor has come forward. (p. 168)

  • Einstein once wrote that our technology has outevolved our humanity, but he didn’t seem much concerned about it. In his subsequent writings he appeared to be convinced that our humanity will catch up with technology. Einstein was wrong, it didn’t!

We are now witnessing how science – the mother of technology – is disassembling society and likely bringing it to extinction. How did we get here? It started when the academia turned its back on God through what one could call “intellectual liberation” (which ultimately led to the “sexual liberation” as well). It was when, as Richard Dawkins put it, “Darwin made it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist”. Liberated from the spirit, matter did what it does best: decay. It was unavoidable that, once the spirit, which ensured matter’s transcendence over nothingness, was scientifically done with, materialism would lead into hedonism and ultimately extinction. Ideologically, this metamorphosis went from conservatism to Marxism via liberalism. Western-type academia is now firmly Marxist and it spawns radicals: communists and anarchists, all social activists par excellence. Is there anything to balance this? The Christian moral alternative is effectively ghettoized because organized Christian religion slept when it should have been wide awake and act. Now it whines and dies.

The long arm of this revolutionary change was and is the mass-media. Media and technology have a long and profitable love affair. But like in most materialistic love affairs, it was just a matter of time till it became a perversion; one that should be discernable to all. But is it? Look at the present: everybody talks about the role of social networking in the revolutionary movements that swept the north of Africa recently. Big words, big expectations and ecstatic media reports. Yet there is a major difference here, a perversion bound to morph into a monstrosity: it is now possible to have revolutions without proper leaders, ideologies, programs etc. “Change” is the buzz word, what comes after is more like fuzz parlance. Is this a good thing? Can this better the world? How? If a dictatorial regime is replaced by an ideological void, we’ll soon see Nietzsche staring at us from the abyss. And he’ll be wearing a turban!

The lesson of the Romanian revolution of 1989-1990 seems to have been completely forgotten. It was the first televised revolution ever, and that because the revolutionaries took over the state television before the revolution and bloodshed reached the peak. A whole country watched the revolution unfold live on the screen and very few saw the reality in the streets; one quite different from the televised history. Recently in Egypt the revolution was broadcast through social networking and it therefore involved only a minority of savvies. Does anyone know what rural Egypt thinks about Tahrir square? Does it even know where it is? And what will these social networking “Mensheviks” do next? This time there are no “Bolsheviks” to threaten them. There is The Muslim Brotherhood though…

I am afraid that Darwin’s long arm has reached into the 21st century’s historical matrix. In one of those strange yet delightful ironies of history, the words uttered in 1974 by the French socialist and Minister of Cultural Affairs André Malraux have a fresh new meaning: “The 21st century will be religious or will not be at all”.  Humanist solutions to society had a whole century – the 20th – to prove themselves. And prove they did, by making it the bloodiest century in the history of mankind! So, what’s next? Where do we go from here? I guess it’s anyone’s guess but one thing is certain to me: Malraux was right.

Delete looks at the surprising phenomenon of perfect remembering in the digital age, and reveals why we must reintroduce our capacity to forget. Digital technology empowers us as never before, yet it has unforeseen consequences as well. Potentially humiliating content on Facebook is enshrined in cyberspace for future employers to see. Google remembers everything we’ve searched for and when. The digital realm remembers what is sometimes better forgotten, and this has profound implications for us all.

In Delete, Viktor Mayer-Schönberger traces the important role that forgetting has played throughout human history, from the ability to make sound decisions unencumbered by the past to the possibility of second chances. The written word made it possible for humans to remember across generations and time, yet now digital technology and global networks are overriding our natural ability to forget–the past is ever present, ready to be called up at the click of a mouse. Mayer-Schönberger examines the technology that’s facilitating the end of forgetting–digitization, cheap storage and easy retrieval, global access, and increasingly powerful software–and describes the dangers of everlasting digital memory, whether it’s outdated information taken out of context or compromising photos the Web won’t let us forget. He explains why information privacy rights and other fixes can’t help us, and proposes an ingeniously simple solution–expiration dates on information–that may.

Delete is an eye-opening book that will help us remember how to forget in the digital age.

Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is professor of internet governance and regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, and a member of the academic advisory board of Microsoft.
